Day 08 : IBMC CHALLENGE #07
“You are going to pick up a news paper article. Either online or take a snapshot from the hard copy paper. Use appropriate reference for the article you have used. You need to debate and discuss your view points on the selected article. How best can you do? You can pick up any category like general, politics, entertainment, etc”
Well, the challenge is called THE NEWS AND PAPER CHALLENGE. And this is the clipping i am using for it .
The irony of the situation though! 😛
Its official now that most of the people (62% in US ) get their news updates from Social media.
The study says 44% of US citizens use Facebook as their source of events and happenings.
This does not mean that if we are not from US, we don’t. Its just that the study was done there. You can always do a poll of yours. Survey your near and dear ones, and you will find the same result. The percentage may even be higher ( yes, that’s because of maths 😛 ).
The question of the hour is why should this bother us? (After all we are only interested in news about the leaked GOT episode !!! 😛 😉 ).
I don’t know about you (as of now, share your opinions and then i will 😀 ) but somehow this trend disturbs me. I am not saying its wrong. But its not completely right either!
Yes, it has its own share of benefits . It saves the most precious human desire : TIME. You get instant updates about every event around the world. You don’t have to wait for the next day’s paper . And, most importantly you can share and know about other people’s opinions on the matter. In fact , the Facebook programme of marking people safe after any disaster is a commendable initiative . 🙂
But (There is Always a BUT ) there are definite drawbacks to this trend.
The very first being the authenticity .
With every person around the globe , literally , having the power to share anything with the world, it has become very easy for nuisance mongers to spread rumours.Only for fun . Or for publicity.
There is no way you can rely on the truthfulness of the subject, unless it appears in the daily ! The news paper is accountable for its actions. A fake FB profile isn’t .
And being the vocal society we are ,no one bats an eyelid before forming opinions on the basis of these news.
Forming an opinion is fine.
Sharing it with others is also welcome.
But publicly shaming someone on the basis of Evidence from Facebook . That’s the height of stupidity.
In this age and date ,it is a child’s play to morph images and create videos. But it takes a mature human’s sensibility whether to rely on it or not.
With the use and spread of social media , the entire purpose of presenting News is also slowly changing. The Facebook pages of leading Indian dailies and news channels are not concerned about increasing awareness of its readers. Rather its purpose has become sensationalising events to “earn” more likes.
I am not saying social media is a bad place full of pranksters and “hear -me-cos-I-can-abuse” type of people . No . I myself will share this blog post on FB to get more readership. And this blog itself ! helps me connect with so many like minded people from around the world 🙂
All i am saying is let NEWS be a point of discussion here. NOT THE FINAL WORD.
